Percie Knowles opened Chico in 1900 to put Paradise Valley's hot water under proper management, and the resort has run continuously since on an unduplicable formula: genuine geothermal pools, genuinely good food, and a genuine refusal to become fancy. The pools are the covenant — the big 103-degree soaking pool and its cooler sibling, open-air year-round, mineral water flowing through constantly (no chlorine bite), steam rising against Emigrant Peak by day and a shocking star field by night; winter soaks with snow landing on your hair are the canonical Montana experience.
The compound rewards wandering: Main Lodge rooms run historic-authentic (brass beds, some shared baths, floors with opinions — priced accordingly and beloved anyway), while the upper cottages, cabins, and newer buildings add private baths, kitchens, and quiet for families; day-use soaking passes keep the pools democratic. The Dining Room is the surprise outsiders don't expect: a legitimately serious kitchen (the beef Wellington and the flaming orange are rituals) over one of Montana's deep wine cellars, booked out most nights — reserve when you book the room. The Saloon counterbalances it completely: pool tables, local bands Fridays and Saturdays, ranch hands and river guides two-stepping with soaked-haired tourists — the valley's living room since forever. Horseback rides, dogsled packages in winter, and the poolside grill fill the margins.
Logistics: Pray, Montana — 45 minutes from Gardiner's arch (the all-season entrance), 30 from Livingston, ten from Sage Lodge (the two make a high-low pairing of the same valley). Weekends book far ahead on the Dining-Room-and-Saloon economy alone; midweek winter stays — soak, Wellington, snow falling into the pool — are the connoisseur's Montana at motel-adjacent prices. Book directly and ask for the room character you want; Chico's range is the point.

Can we soak without staying?
Yes — day passes keep the pools open to all, and plenty of park travelers detour just for a soak and lunch. Overnight guests get the late-night star soak, which is the real Chico.
What are the rooms like?
A deliberate range: Main Lodge historic rooms (brass beds, character, some shared baths) at gentle prices, up through cottages, cabins, and modern rooms with private baths and kitchens. Ask for the register you want.
Is the restaurant really that good?
Montanans drive hours for it — a serious kitchen and deep cellar wearing a hot-springs resort's bathrobe. Reserve the Dining Room when you book the room; the Saloon's burgers catch the overflow happily.
