Mammoth has a long lodging history. Hotels have stood on this site since the park's early decades, and the surrounding district, with the fort's officers' quarters and the elk that graze the lawns, gives it a distinct, almost village-like feel. In autumn, the elk rut plays out right in front of the hotel, with bulls bugling on the grass; in winter, the terraces steam and the bison move down to lower elevations nearby.
Booking craft: in winter, book a hot tub cabin early if you want one, since there are only four. Suites are worth it for families who want space. Plan dawn departures for Lamar Valley, about an hour east, and keep a flexible schedule in case of road closures in storms. Snowcoach tours to the interior and Old Faithful depart from Mammoth in winter, allowing a day trip or a transfer to the Snow Lodge.
Practicals: in Mammoth Hot Springs, about 5 miles from the North Entrance at Gardiner. Winter season December 15, 2026 to March 8, 2027; the summer season reopens in late April 2027. Bookings through the park's lodging concessioner. Fit: winter wildlife trips, first-timers, families and couples.
